Online editorial can make a huge difference to any business' success. But to make web content work for you, you need to craft it carefully and optimise it for both the users who will read it and the search engines that will index it. And that's where I come in.

I help companies make their web presence more compelling by revamping or creating websites, making copy more web-friendly, supplying original online content, and launching special projects--always with an eye on users and another on search engines.

You can rest assured I know what I am talking about. When I started writing for the web, achieving 100 page views a week was a great result, Google didn't exist and Compuserve was the second biggest player in Internet access. The medium has grown and changed enormously since those early days of 1997--the first community wave, when forum and chat were the buzzword; the craze for city hubs; the rise and fall of portals and vortals; the insane days of the dot.com boom and the somber ones of the bust; the endless permutations of online advertising; the advent of broadband and immersive features; blogging and citizen journalism; the explosion of Web 2.0; the mania for social networking...I lived, enjoyed and, sometimes, suffered it all first hand.

Calling upon this experience, I provide online editorial consultancy services to publishing and other industries. My areas of expertise include conceiving, project managing and testing new site launches; reviewing the performance of existing websites; developing new content and design strategies to maximise traffic; producing web content on demand; using editorial to boost SEO; providing training on how to generate web content; and carrying out market reviews and competitors' analysis.

Some of the projects I carried out in the last two years include:
  • Providing strategic advice on the relaunch of the IPC Media Subscriptions website
  • Undertaking a detailed competitor analysis for IPC Inspire
  • Reviewing the online women's market and providing strategic editorial development advice to IPC Connect
  • Reviewing the performance of existing sites, developing content and marketing strategies, and training the editorial and marketing teams for IPC Southbank
  • Providing editorial and SEO training to Weddingmagazine.co.uk
  • Creating a test plan for Marieclaire.co.uk's relaunch
  • Providing SEO and migration support to Womanandhome.com
Prior to becoming an online editorial consultant in 2005, I was content director for IPC Inspire's Countrylife.co.uk and Horseandhound.co.uk. Before that, I was editor of Hotelworld.com (a now-defunct site once owned by Associated Newspapers), associate editor at Conde Nast Traveller Online, and online writer at Vogue Online.

I continue to keep abreast of online editorial developments through my writing commitment with Italymag.co.uk.
